Jalpaiguri/Guwahati, January 14 (Agency) Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav visited the accident site of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal and said that there was some defect in the equipment of the rail-engine. Twelve coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express train derailed on Thursday near Domohani in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district and some of them overturned. Nine people were killed and at least 36 others were injured in the accident. Vaishnav said the cause of the accident would be known only after the engine equipment was fully opened. The minister also met the injured passengers at the hospital. After inspecting the spot, he told reporters, “There was any defect in any equipment of the rail-engine, not in the speed of the train or the tracks. There will be marks on the equipment. The cause of the accident will be known only after opening it and looking at the marks. The Railway Minister said, ‘The root cause of the accident will be known soon. The unfortunate incident is being investigated. We pray for peace to the souls of those killed and a speedy recovery to the injured. Talks are on with the families regarding the distribution of ex-gratia amount. According to Guneet Kaur, Principal Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), Vaishnav reached Domohani railway station at 9.38 am and left for the spot on a motor trolley within two minutes. Kaur said, “He inspected the trolley itself to ascertain the status of the tracks and repair works at the spot. He also thoroughly inspected the ‘underframe’ of the rail-engine and its ‘braking system’. He said that the death toll in the accident has risen to nine, out of which three are yet to be identified. 36 others were injured in the accident. Out of these, 23 people are being treated at ‘Super Specialty Hospital’ in Jalpaiguri, while six people are admitted in North Bengal Medical College and 7 in Maynaguri Rural Hospital. He said that the accident took place near Domohani in Alipurduar division of Northeast Frontier Railway at 5 pm on Thursday.
