India’s two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu registered a struggling win in the women’s singles opening round of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament here on Wednesday while B Sai Praneeth and Kidambi Srikanth also advanced to the men’s singles second round. Reigning world champion Sindhu made a good comeback after losing the first game against Japan’s Aya Ohori. They advanced to the pre-quarterfinals by defeating Ohori 17-21, 21-17, 21-17 in a three-game match that lasted one hour and 10 minutes. With this win, Sindhu took her impressive record against the Japanese to 11-0.
In men’s singles, world number 16 B Sai Praneeth registered a 21-19, 21-18 win over France’s Toma Junior Popov in the opening round. Like last week’s Indonesia Masters quarter-final, Srikanth again defeated compatriot HS Prannoy. After reaching successive semi-finals at the Hilo Open and Indonesia Masters, former number one Srikanth defeated Prannoy 21-15, 19-21, 21-12 in 56 minutes. Mixed doubles pair of N Sikki Reddy and Dhruv Kapila crashed out of the first round after losing 7-21, 12-21 to Japanese pair of Kyohei Yamashita and Naru Shinoya. N Sikki Reddy didn’t have a good day as she crashed out in the women’s doubles also in the first round. N Sikki Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa beat fifth seeded Bulgarian pair of Gabriella Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva 27-29, 18-21
