In UP, 35% of MLAs have criminal cases registered, BJP’s maximum, ADR report reveals

The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) on Tuesday released a detailed survey report on 396 sitting MLAs in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly. The ADR report claimed that 35 per cent (140) MLAs have criminal cases registered against them and 27 per cent MLAs have some kind of connection with the crime.

Of the 304 MLAs, 77 have criminal cases against them, while 18 MLAs in the 49-member Samajwadi Party also fall in this category. Two MLAs in the Bahujan Samaj Party have a criminal history, while the Congress has one such member. The report further states that out of 396 MLAs, 313 are crorepatis.

BJP with 304 MLAs has 235 Crorepati MLAs and out of 49 MLAs, SP has 42 Crorepati MLAs. The BSP has 15 crorepati MLAs, while the Congress has five crorepati MLAs. The richest MLAs in BSP are Guddu Jamali from Azamgarh and Vinay Tiwari from Gorakhpur.

Interestingly, two BJP MLAs, who are also ministers in debt, are Nand Gopal Nandi and Siddharth Nath Singh. The MLAs with low assets include Ajay Kumar Lallu of the Congress and Dhananjay and Vijay Rajbhar of the BJP. Out of 396 MLAs, 95 have studied till class 12.

Four MLAs are only literate while five are diploma holders. Around 206 MLAs are in the age group of 25 to 50 years while 190 MLAs are in the age group of 51 to 80 years. ADR coordinator Santosh Srivastava said that the survey was done before the assembly elections so that people can know their MLAs. He said that usually we do such surveys before elections but they are done in a phased manner so this time we have done it in a comprehensive manner.
