Maharashtra: Big blow to BJP before by-elections, former state vice president, former MLA join Congress

In a setback to the Bharatiya Janata Party, its Maharashtra unit’s former vice-president Bhaskarrao Patil-Khatgaonkar and former MLA Omprakash A. Pokarn joined the Congress on Sunday. The development is expected to boost the prospects of the Congress in the district in view of the crucial Deglur assembly by-poll to be held on October 30.

Patil-Khatgaonkar and Pokarna made this announcement at a joint press conference here today (Sunday) afternoon in the presence of Nanded Congress leader and Public Works Minister Ashok Chavan.

Patil-Khatgaonkar, three-time MP and MLA and two-time minister of state, former party veteran and Union minister, late S.B. Chavan’s son-in-law and Ashok is Chavan’s brother-in-law.
Pokarn, a former Nanded mayor and MLA, had joined the BJP in 2014, but has decided to return to the Congress along with his mentor Patil-Khatgaonkar.

In Deglur, the Congress has nominated Jitesh Antapur, son of late MLA Raosaheb Antapurkar, who died due to COVID-19 in April, and the BJP has fielded former Shiv Sena MLA Subhash Sabne, who recently joined the Congress. were involved. Apart from Patil-Khatgaonkar and Pokarna, Ashok Chavan and other leaders also welcomed many other office-bearers and workers.
