New Delhi, October 13 (Agency)
Axar Patel was replaced by pacer all-rounder Shardul Thakur in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup starting October 17 in the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Thakur (29) has impressed by taking 18 wickets for Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League being played in UAE. With this, India announced its final squad for the T20 World Cup. Teams have been given time till October 15 to make changes. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said in a statement, “The All India Senior Selection Committee has included Shardul Thakur in the main team after discussions with the team management. All-rounder Axar Patel was part of the 15-man squad but now he will be added to the list of ‘stand-by’ players.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who plays for Mumbai Indians, was not bowling during the IPL due to fitness issues, so the selectors wanted a cover for him.
A source close to the selection committee said, “The selectors realized that they lacked a fast bowler and then even Hardik Pandya was not bowling so he needed an all-rounder in the main team.” “Akshar will continue as a ‘stand-by’ and if Ravindra Jadeja gets injured, he will be back in the main team,” the source said. As long as Jaddu plays, the letter will not be needed.
