Indian shuttler PV Sindhu entered the semi-finals of Tokyo Olympics women’s singles event by defeating Akane Yamaguchi of Japan 21-13, 22-20 in 56 minutes.
The silver medalist of Rio Olympics 2016 thus kept her hopes of a maiden Olympic gold medal in badminton. She will now face the winner of the second quarterfinal between Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand and Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei.
Defending world champion Sindhu took advantage of an 11-7 win record against world number five Yamaguchi to clinch the opening game 21-13 in just 23 minutes. In the second game, Yamaguchi tried to make a comeback but the Indian did not allow him to do so and won in 33 minutes to secure a place in the last four.
