Losing to Zverev broke Djokovic’s dream of completing the Golden Slam, now will fight for the bronze medal

TOKYO, July 30 (AP)

World’s top-ranked tennis player Novak Djokovic’s dream of completing a Golden Slam was shattered by a loss to Alexander Zverev in the men’s singles semifinals of the Olympics on Friday. The Serbian player was defeated by Germany’s Zverev 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in a match that lasted two hours and three minutes after falling behind in the first set. Djokovic was trying to become the first male player to complete the Golden Slam by winning a gold medal at the Olympics. He has won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon this year while the US Open is yet to be held. Golden Slam is the winning of Olympic gold with all the four Grand Slams in the same year. Steffi Graf (1988) is the only tennis player to achieve this feat. Fourth seed Zverev will face Karen Khachanov for the gold medal. The Russian player defeated Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 6-3 in another semi-final. Djokovic will take on Busta in the bronze medal bout. This is Djokovic’s first defeat in the last two and a half months. Earlier, he had to face defeat against Rafael Nadal at the Italian Open. In humid weather here, Djokovic failed to maintain his momentum after winning the first set with ease and Zverev scored points with ease.

Djokovic had previously won a bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. However, he has a chance to win a gold medal in mixed doubles as well. She and Nina Stojanovich will face Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) pair of Elena Vesnina and Aslan Karatsev in the mixed doubles semi-finals.
