Hockey: India beat Japan 5-3 in a pool match before the quarter-finals

Gurjant Singh scored twice as the Indian men’s hockey team beat Japan 5-3 in their last match of Pool A of the Tokyo Olympic Games here on Friday. For India, Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 13th minute while Gurjant Singh (17th and 56th), Shamsher Singh (34th) and Neelkant Sharma (51st) scored field goals. Kenta Tanaka (19th), Kota Watanabe (33rd) and Kazuma Murata (59th) scored for Japan. India had already secured their place in the quarter-finals but with this victory, they will go into the last eight match with a boost of morale. Apart from Japan, India defeated New Zealand, Spain and Argentina in the pool stage but lost to Australia.
