Peace march against Pegasus spying: Many Congress leaders including state president detained

Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Kumar Lallu and other Congressmen were taken into custody by the police in an attempt to hold a peace march against the alleged use of Israeli spyware ‘Pegasus’ to spy on the phone numbers of senior party leader Rahul Gandhi. Congress spokesperson Ashok Singh said on Thursday that Ajay Kumar Lallu had called for a peace march from ‘Swasthya Bhavan’ to Raj Bhavan and to submit a memorandum against Rahul Gandhi’s spying, but Lallu and other senior party leaders were on Wednesday They were barred inside their homes since night with the deployment of heavy police force. Singh said that when Lallu came out of his house this morning and insisted on leaving for Swasthya Bhavan, the police misbehaved with him and stopped him saying that he did not have permission to take out the march. Following this, the Congress President and other party workers were taken into custody. Singh said Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra Mona, senior leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui and MLC Deepak Singh among others are also under house arrest since Wednesday night. The spokesperson quoted the state president as saying that this government does not respect the right to privacy and attacks on the freedom of individuals cannot be justified. Congress party will never shy away from fighting against this attack on democracy. Singh said five groups were planning to reach Swasthya Bhavan to start the march and when they were stopped from doing so, party workers staged protests at various places in the city and they were arrested. He said that all the arrested Congressmen have been taken to the Eco Garden.
